After the fabulous closing night of Lysistrata and a wonderful birthday party for [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate and DD's darling Tadpole, [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I were crossing the street this evening when we were hit by a car. It was making a left turn into the street we were crossing; the driver had probably slowed for the turn but didn't seem to slow at all to avoid hitting us; he did pull over a ways down the block and come back. There were lots of witnesses, among them [livejournal.com profile] anomie666 who happened to be on a bus that was passing and who stayed with us through the whole evening. He is a wonderful person and he deserves a medal and some really good Scotch.

All the emergency vehicles (at least two police cars, a fire truck, an ambulance, and eventually the tow truck to take away the driver's car since he left in other accommodation) had enough flashing colored lights for a Somerville Christmas. We declined the ambulance since we were just a few blocks from the hospital and the paramedics wanted to put us in back and neck braces and that seemed over the top (neither of us had hit our heads or had spine pain). [livejournal.com profile] anomie666 walked with us to the hospital.

The ER experience was quite good; everybody was very nice and we were treated very well. We both got lots of X-rays. I got the brunt of the impact, but I'm just banged up a lot and swollen and bruised. [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom has a small fracture in her elbow (a radial head fracture), probably from when she landed. (I was thrown over the hood of the car, into [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom who was also clipped by the car.) They gave her a splint and a sling, which is going to be a hassle for a while. We're both on industrial-strength ibuprofen and I'll be icing for a while. (Fortunately, [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom had some bags of edamame in the freezer. :-)

Well, it wasn't the evening we were expecting, but at least we spent it together. [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom, I love you through thick and thin.

I tried to post this this morning, but LJ was wonky. Happy birthday to my dear friend, [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate. I owed you a huge debt of gratitude for the joy you’d brought into my life even before you introduced me to [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom. I hope your day is full of love and delight and happiness, as they all should be.

Too lazy to write up my own post, so I’ll just link to plumtreeblossom’s post about our weekend on Cape Cod. (I will add that I actually love the weather here, it’s got that sort of pre- or post-storm energy I really love, and it’s warm enough that the slight intermittent drizzle is pleasant.)

Since last weekend (Circus weekend!), I’ve been busy.

You might need to click this twice; I do, on two different browsers:

  • Monday was the regular Poly Boston dinner at Bertucci’s. Unfortunately [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom couldn’t make it because of rehearsal. It was quite fun, with a bunch of cool new people!
  • Tuesday I had dinner with [livejournal.com profile] xmelancholia near (my) work; she introduced me to a new-to-me restaurant, Mulan. I loved their chicken in chili sauce. More importantly, I loved the opportunity to catch up with [livejournal.com profile] xmelancholia. She rocks, and I hadn’t seen her in a while.
  • Wednesday I usually get together with [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine for dinner, but she was out of town for a funeral (my sympathies to [livejournal.com profile] buxom_bey, whose relative’s funeral it was), so [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I went over to hang out with [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate, DD, and little J, and we had a blast. Love that little baby! (Actually, love all of them!)
  • Thursday I got together with [livejournal.com profile] teratomarty, who works near me. Among the impetuses (impetusses? impeti?) for getting together were some biological specimens (small animals, mostly arthropods) in jars that I had aquired, and wanted to pass along to him. I had enjoyed the food at Mulan so much on Tuesday that I suggested we go there again. Had a great time.
  • Friday morning in the shower I heard that the annual sheepshearing festival at Gore Place was going to be Saturday. Oops! [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I love that event, and had tried unsuccessfully a month or so ago to figure out when it was. We ended up shuffling some plans around so we could go.
  • Friday night I drove to the airport to pick up [livejournal.com profile] bedfull_o_books, who was arriving at Logan after a very very long series of flights from Beirut. Got to hear about her fabulous visit to Lebanon and Egypt with [livejournal.com profile] r_ness, and she brought me some Lebanese coffee with cardamom which I look forward to making.
  • Saturday I slept really late (needed to; the flight was delayed, and I was sleep-deprived anyway to start with), so we were late to the sheepshearing festival, but we got there in time to enjoy epic fair noms, stroll among the vendors (and make some impulse purchases), and see the border collie demo (border collies managing sheep and goats). I had foolishly forgotten to bring my good camera, but I got a few photos on my phone which I may get around to posting eventually. Afterwards, we had dinner at Blue Ribbon Barbeque in Arlington, which I’d never been to before (although I’ve had it catered at work a few times). The brisket was quite good. (The sausage was good too, but, contrary to the menu’s assertion, it was not at all spicy.)
  • Today, after sleeping in (which we both needed) and breakfast at The Broken Yolk, I came home to Quincy for a very productive afternoon of yardwork and working on the house. I completed three of my four painting projects; just have a final coat on the office door left to do. I didn’t get as much cleaning done as I’d like, but I got lots of work done on the yard and I have the pleasant aches of a productive day of physical labour.

So, busy and happy (and as always, epically in love with my honeywuzzle).

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate! I wish we could be celebrating it with you, but we'll be thinking of you from the road and sending you love and warm wishes. We love you!

Hi. First of all, on Thursday [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I saw The Yeomen of the Guard put on by the MIT Gilbert and Sullivan Players, and it was a rolicking good time.

Then yesterday (Saturday) we went to see the Boston Ballet. Aside from The Nutcracker, this was the first time I’d seen ballet live, and I loved it, as did [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom. They performed three pieces. More about the performances. )

We got relatively affordable tickets through MIT, but I think they may have us hooked. (“Psst! Hey, kids, wanna see a ballet? All the cool kids are doing it! First one’s free!”)

Then today we helped [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate and DD move to their new condo. (Well, and Julian moved too, but he wasn’t really carrying his weight. Kid’s a slacker — he didn’t even help with the chest freezer!) Their new place is much closer to [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom’s, and is really nice. I’m looking forward to having them a bit more conveniently located. They had a lot of people helping and everything they were planning to move got moved in good time.

Then tonight were tryouts for PMRP’s summer live radio drama trilogy. I’m trying out for voice rôles this time (after doing a lot of Foley); [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom is trying out for both voice and Foley. That was fun, and we’ll see what happens.

Life is good.

And now it’s 11:30pm and I’m home and really tired (physical labour will do that to you), and it’s just barely conceivable that I will be asleep before midnight for a change.

No time for a full update, but:
  • On Friday, got together with [livejournal.com profile] ifuonlyknew, who is at home recuperating from surgery. Was great to hang out with her.
  • On Saturday, my beloved [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I saw the circus and had a wonderful time. This was also my first opportunity to see her awesome new hairdo! Then we went over to [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate's and DD's and got to hang out with them and their adorable month-old baby Julian. That was so fabulous!
  • On Sunday, after a lovely morning with [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom, I got together with [livejournal.com profile] eisa for dinner. Our plans were slightly altered by the fact that the Brazilian barbecue place we were aiming for was closed "by order of the court-appointed receiver". Sad! But we found yummy Indian food in Union Square and got to do a lot of catching up. Always great seeing her.
Must hurry off to work now, but wanted to let you all know I'm still here.

I have done many fun things lately (most of them with [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom). In no particular order:
  • Saw The Social Network and The King’s Speech. Both were great and had very good (if very different) acting. The King’s Speech led to a lot of poking around on the net looking up historical information and finding actual recordings of speeches (see comments) by George VI (including the eponymous one) and Edward VIII.
  • Got together with [livejournal.com profile] desiringsubject and [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and a few other people after work a couple times for drinks and had an epically lovely time.
  • Had my weekly dinner with [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine (having had to cancel the previous week). Since the weather was so terrible and [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom had had a rough and very wet and cold day at work, I asked if she could join us so she could decompress from the day (and get a ride and not have to trudge through the snow and ice), and that was lovely.
  • Saw [livejournal.com profile] gilana and [livejournal.com profile] ladrescher in The Vagina Monologues. This ended up with a delightful bonus: We ran into [livejournal.com profile] joyeous at the show, and went out to Grendel’s afterwards. (Maybe sometime I’ll get my picture of the snow koala we saw on our way up; in the meantime, if you follow [livejournal.com profile] joyeous on Twitter or Facebook you can see her photo of it. Too cute!)
  • Went to [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate and DD’s for games, and played Dominion for the first time in a very long time, and had a wonderful time. It’s so wonderful to have DD local again!
  • Continued to enjoy owning a car again.
Another wonderful thing I have been doing a lot of is sleeping! I’ve always had a problem getting enough sleep, but lately I’ve been managing to get to sleep earlier than usual, and sleep late on weekends, and I’m feeling much better rested than usual. (Not that [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate and DD would have noticed this the other night. :-) I wonder if all the snow I’ve been having to shovel might have something to do with how well I’ve been sleeping. :-/

So in general, I am feeling very good. I am, however, not so thrilled these days with living on this side of the river. Anybody wanna buy half of a duplex in Quincy with a garage and ample off-street parking?

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate, who has brought many wonderful things into my life, but none more wonderful than [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom[livejournal.com profile] surrealestate is how we met.

[livejournal.com profile] surrealestate, I hope you really enjoyed your birthday present, even though it was about a week early. I bet you will get lots of enjoyment out of him! Properly cared for, he can last a lifetime. :-) And I hear you have a late birthday present coming, too...

Thanks for being a part of my life, [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate! You’re a delight, and I hope you’re having a wonderful birthday.

(Sorry for poor formatting; I appear to have lost the ability to type angle brackets on my phone.)

Went out to Western Mass with plumtreeblossom this weekend to attend the wedding of surrealestate and DDL. (Much of it, at any rate — for complicated reasons I ended up making myself useful with cupcakes during the actual ceremony.) We had a great time, and it was wonderful to meet so many of their family members, and it was nifty to get to break in the new car with a long trip. (Although I should get the brakes looked at.)

surrealestate and DDL, we love you, and we were so happy to see you so happy and to get to celebrate your life together!

I finally got my pictures from “A Nice Danish Boy”, uploaded to Flickr. Here they are. Sorry they’re not cropped and colour-balanced; it took me long enough to get this far.

(For anybody on my Friends list who doesn’t know, this is the short play written by the excellent Mark Harvey Levine that [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom (commissioned! and) directed for Festival@First 7: Shaken Up Shakespeare, performed by [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate, [livejournal.com profile] barumonkey, [livejournal.com profile] saxikath, and Lev. Here’s plumtreeblossom’s post about it.

I’ve got photos from the other shows, too, and they will go up on Flickr as I get time

Happy birthday to the wonderful, smart, gorgeous, spectacularly energetic [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate! [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate, I am lucky to have you in my life.

All the rest of you, did you know that [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate is training for the Boston Marathon? (See “spectacularly energetic” above.) If you like, you can sponsor her at this link.

I can’t believe I haven’t posted this before now! I blame illness, extreme busyness, and not enough time for LJ. Anyway, by now this event is not news to very many of you because it’s been all over LJ, but in case you haven’t heard about it or didn’t know I was involved:

I’m involved with a live radio drama presentation of an adaptation of The War of the Worlds, with four performances at the end of this month at the Somerville Theater. I am doing Foley (i.e., sound effects). Among other things, you will get to see me fall down. My beloved [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom is Foley-team captain; she’ll be onstage making lots of noise too, as will [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate and Laurie and Emily, whose LJ names I don’t know (if they have them). And the voice talent is very nearly as awesome as we are!

The War of the Worlds show is part of The Big Broadcast of 1938, and you can follow that link for reservations or more information. (In case anyone is confused, you use the switches and lights on the right hand part of the page to navigate the site; they turn into icons for the particular function when you mouse over them. The bottom one is for reservations.)

The War of the Worlds is loosely based on the famous Orson Welles broadcast adaptation of the novel, and tells the story from a Boston perspective. The other part of the show is an episode of the Frank Cyrano Byfar Hour.

Music is provided by the amazing Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band, so it’s guaranteed to be incredible. The whole shebang is put on by the Post-Meridian Radio Players.

Performances are Thursday the 29th, Friday the 30th, and two performances on Saturday the 31st. You should come see it!

I have lots of wonderful weekends, but I just had an especially wonderful one.

It started on Friday night, when [livejournal.com profile] warlord_mit and [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate had a wine tasting (with several selections from [livejournal.com profile] warlord_mit’s ample cellar) followed by a Chicago singalong. That was just about the most fun event I’ve been to since, well, probably the last party at their place. :-) [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I had a great time.

On Saturday [EDIT: after a yummy breakfast of catching up with [livejournal.com profile] beetiger, her son [livejournal.com profile] projectmothra, and [livejournal.com profile] lediva at Johnny D’s], we needed to pick up new veterinary supplies for her cat Rowley from Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in JP, and since I really miss Jamaica Pond and [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom has taken up long walks, I suggested that we combine pleasure and business and take a walk around Jamaica Pond first. Which we did, and we had a lovely and relaxing time and got to see lots of dogs and lots of scenery. (I did, however, break the screen on my old small camera while I was carrying it, though. Good think I have the awesome new one, and a camera on my cell phone.) Nice to enjoy the outdoors, now that Massachusetts has finally decided it’s summer after a couple months of Novembers.

After that, we went to Angell and picked up Rowley’s supplies and window-shopped for quite a while in their adoption center. Had a wonderful time visiting with all the animals! Then we went home to our respective houses.

Sunday was a workday at [livejournal.com profile] theatreatfirst, so I got to see [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom again at that, as well as lots of other wonderful Firsties. It let out very early, so we had an early dinner together outdoors in Davis Square before going to her place to take care of Rowley.

Don’t read if needles or related things upset you. )

And today I went in to town to meet [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom for the Indian lunch buffet at Shalimar of India in Central Square. Yummy food and a nice little daytime mini-date.

Oh, and today was a good day to take off from work, apparently. I most often take the Green Line down Huntington Ave, and I would have been significantly delayed. That was a couple blocks from my building at work. I’m really glad nobody was hurt!
beowabbit: (Me: brain MRI)
[So I composed this last night and was just about to post it, and a slip of the thumb on the trackpad wiped most of it out. Retyping and posting now, but let’s pretend I posted this last night.]

First the good:

Had a fabulous day with [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom, [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate', and some other folks. Met [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom at The Burren for a yummy brunch, then browsed in a housewares store before meeting [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate and some other Firsties back at The Burren for a performance of All in the Timing, a collection of short plays that Theatre@First had done a few years ago. It was a lot of fun. When Theatre@First had done it, each one-act play had had a different cast, but this group did it with mostly the same actors on all six plays — and some of them were real feats of memorization. It was a lot of fun and a great performance.

Afterwards, [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I went back to [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate’s for a game of Scrabble and a couple of games of Chez Geek, and had a great time. On our way back to [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom’s she and I got really yummy Thai food at Tip Top Thai near [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate’s. And it’s so nice out that she and I just [Sunday night] had our regular nightcap and wonderful meandering conversation (and her goodnight cigarette) out on her balcony.

A very good day.

Now the bad:

On Friday night, I coughed. Just once, and not a very big cough. Barely clearing my throat. But it hurt my back really badly, and it still hurts (although it’s somewhat better now).

On Saturday evening, as I was finally getting around to the morning shower I hadn’t managed all day because my back hurt too much to stand for that long I reached for the bathroom doorknob. And felt a sharp pain in my wrist, along with a weird shifting sensation. The sharp pain went away pretty quickly, and I thought I was fine until I open the shower curtain and it was back again. And I still have it, whenever I do the wrong thing. Putting on my coat or buttoning or unbuttoning buttons is always the wrong thing. Taking my cell phone out of my pocket or steadying myself on a wall (did I mention that my back is still in a lot of pain?) is sometimes the wrong thing. Conveniently, typing is never the wrong thing, and I had no problem holding my cards in that hand at [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate’s.

And as we were getting ready to leave [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate’s last night, I bent over to tie my shoe, and hurt my back in a completely different place. Fortunately that only lasted about 20min and seems to have gone away completely by now, but still!

This is Not Okay. I’m going to take this body back for a refund.

(I have a vague notion that this joint stuff might be related to side effects from a new drug my doctor put me on — I’ve got some other, less worrisome side effects that I’m pretty sure are from it — and I’ll be talking to him as soon as possible.)
beowabbit: (Food: Christmas dinner at my sister's)
So last night I got together with [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate at House of Tibet in Teele Square and had a yummy meal. We started with veggie momos, which were very good and mostly potatoey, and a mixed appetizer platter. As my entrée I had a yak dish, which I think was the first time I had ever had yak. It was very good! The gravy it was in was also yummy, but I’d like to try it without sauce sometime so I get a clearer sense of the flavour of the meat. [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom got a noodle dish with pea pods, which I sampled a fair amount of; the noodles were especially good. And the conversation was lots of fun.

This morning, [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I had a yummy breakfast at The Burren, one of our favourite places for breakfast in Davis. It was crowded this morning — for a long time when we’d go we’d usually be the only people there, or one of two occupied tables. Today we got seats right away, but the place was almost full. They certainly deserve the business; their food is great. The pancakes (which [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom usually has) are especially good.

I know I’ve been terrible about calling attention to people’s birthdays here for the past few months. I’m sorry about that; it doesn’t mean I don’t love you all, it just means that life has been largely too busy for posting. But I can’t let the day go by without wishing [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate a happy birthday. I mean, she introduced me to LiveJournal! She’s why I originally got an account. Not only that, she introduced me to [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom. I owe her like nobody’s business!

So here’s to another year of being lucky enough to live on the same planet as [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate. Not everybody’s that lucky, you know!
beowabbit: (Default)
Wednesday after work [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I went to the final outdoor Landmarks Orchestra concert at the Hatch Shell of the season, Verdi’s Requiem. (The shell was insanely crowded, with a full orchestra, four solists, and, according to the program, a “double chorus”, whatever that means.) It’s not my favorite piece of music, but I had a great time with my sweetie; I love listening to music outdoors. I’m very lucky to live in a city with these sorts of opportunities.

And there were a few toddlers who danced to the music, up by the stage. They were adorable, especially the first one, who looked so earnest and at the same time, so into what she was doing! If she’d still been there by the end of the concert I would have gone up to her and thanked her for her performance.

Thursday I met [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and most of Team Uterus from her show in Festival@First V[livejournal.com profile] surrealestate, [livejournal.com profile] wellstar, [livejournal.com profile] saraheeyore, and the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] oakenguy, who organized the trip — to see the MIT Musical Theatre Guild’s performance of Into the Woods, with a brief (but lovely) appearance and amazing, awesome sets by fellow Uterus Fairy [livejournal.com profile] brief_life. We had a wonderful, wonderful time!

When I got home from work last night, [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine and [livejournal.com profile] m_c_t asked me if I wanted to go out for margaritas (oh, and maybe food, while we were at it). Yes, I did. So we had a lovely time drinking margaritas and coladas and eating potato skins at Acapulco’s in Quincy Center.

And tonight sweet [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I are going to Providence for WaterFire, one of our favourite romantic dates. And tomorrow we get to have dim sum with NPCs¹ J. and S. and some of their friends, which I’m sure will be lovely.

I do still need a few more days in the week, though.
¹ I.e., they don’t have LJ accounts.
beowabbit: (People: me with plumtreeblossom May 2007)
Wow, busy weekend! Last night was closing night of Festival@First 5, including the one-act that [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom directed and [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate, [livejournal.com profile] wellstar, [livejournal.com profile] missmelissa, [livejournal.com profile] oakenguy, and [livejournal.com profile] brief_life performed in. They all did an incredible job, and it was awesome, and I’m sorry it’s over.

After the performance was strike, which went smoothly, and a great cast party at [livejournal.com profile] hahathor’s stunning house. [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I left early (around 1:30am) in part due to concerns about her cats, and collapsed into bed.

This morning we had a lovely breakfast on the patio at The Burren (in the course of which we ran into [livejournal.com profile] ladrescher, who was in the same one-act as [livejournal.com profile] hahathor), and then I came home to do some more cleaning and kitchen reorganization before my parents ([livejournal.com profile] silverlibre and [livejournal.com profile] ka9sqb) arrive tonight. Then [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine came home briefly to take me to the room I rented for them near my house and show me around. (I hadn’t had a chance to go pick up the keys and take the tour, so she had ended up doing it on my behalf.)

And now I’m going to straighten up for a bit, and do dishes and laundry, and have my first shower since strike which I desperately need, and then I go meet my lovely girlfriend [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom whom I have been dating for two years, and celebrate our two-year Sweetieversary with her at the same dim-sum place where we had our first date! Actually, specifying the start of our relationship is kind of tricky; we met through [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate, but didn’t really get to spend enough time together to get to know each other for quite some time. We did manage to express a certain amount of mutual interest before our first date, but for purposes of celebration, we count our first official date as the start of the relationship.

Thank you for two delightful years, sweetie! I love you.

(Sorry for any sensitive readers who may have gone into insulin shock. :-)

After our Sweetieversary dinner, we’re going to go pick up my parents at the train station and bring them back to Quincy and get them settled into their room. (It’s in a little rooming house just about two real blocks from my house. Very convenient!)

And I have tomorrow and Tuesday off from work, so I can spend the days touring Boston and Quincy with them. Yay!
