(1) I just got home from hearing (and watching) the first concert of Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band. It was fabulous! I haven’t got the energy to write how fabulous it was, but it was exceptionally fabulous. Besides the awesome tide of music, there were circus-style performances: stilts, clowns, aerial silks, poi, hula hoops, belly dancing, and a couple of human marionettes. I was really tired, but I’m so glad I got myself there.

[EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] siderea has a great review here.]

(2) A couple weeks ago when I was over at [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom’s, her cats were being especially cute and photogenic curled up on the bed, and so I recorded them for posterity.

And speaking of [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom, we had a lovely time together this weekend. She came over on Saturday and made us yummy shepherd’s pie (leftovers of which I am having as I type), we watched The Forgotten, which was very interesting and sophisticated in some ways, and very cheesy in others, but was quite fun.

This morning we had brunch at a local diner, spent a little time along the Quincy shoreline, and then spent quite a lot of time at the huge Chinese grocery near my house that [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine introduced me to. (And of course this means that we both came home with shocking quantities of interesting food.)

All in all, it’s been an excellent weekend.

I’m too sleepy to do justice to my lovely date with [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom, so I’ll just point y’all at her post about it. I’ll just add that Casino Royale is the first post-Connory Bond movie that I think deserves a place next to the original Connory ones (and a place next to Ian Fleming’s novels).

(But the product placements were very annoying.)

Oh, I’ll also add that [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom is a cutie and a delight!

After my lovely date with [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom, I drove [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine and her luggage home to her place from [livejournal.com profile] darxus’, and then we took her cat Chickenfinger whom I’d been catsitting over to her place from mine.

([livejournal.com profile] darxus has posted links to their India pictures, both his and [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine’s, in his journal at http://darxus.livejournal.com/160407.html. I haven’t looked through all of them, but I got to see some of them on the camera over dinner after I picked them up. Wow. Just wow.)

PS — and as [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom says, Tú y yo near Powderhouse Circle has amazing food. I want to go back there lots and lots.

I’m kind of behind on posting this; almost everybody on my Friends list has probably already seen this announced, but my friend [livejournal.com profile] ragingamazon has made a Men in Skirts¹ calendar, and Yours Truly is proud to be Miss April. (Links are work-safe, although a few of the cuties are bare-chested.) Get yours while supplies last!² (And most of the other models are friends of mine.)

(Back when [livejournal.com profile] ragingamazon and I first did the photoshoot, I meant to post a few of the pictures. Maybe this will nudge me to actually get around to doing that.)
¹ Technically, I’m in a sarong. Don’t tell the language police. I think there might be a kilt or two in there, too.

One of the side benefits of dating [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom is that she lives so close to Somerville’s Powderhouse Park, site of the only known surviving Civil-War era ballistic missile, a remnant of President Lincoln’s Strategick Defence Initiative, or SDI.

Saw the Fireworks with [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine and her family and her friend C. They were amazing — better than last year! Here are some pictures. They don’t capture the size — probably a fifth of the arc of the sky, from where we were sitting — or the brightness, but they’re better than nothing. I have some video I may trim down and post a link to at some point, too.

Did I mention that the fireworks were amazing? They were amazing.

PS — A few more are available in the gallery. I think these are the best, though.

I may not be done sorting and annotating last February’s pictures from Hawai‘i, but at least I finally have some pictures from the Mermaid Parade last weekend up. (Unfortunately, I left my fresh camera battery in the car, so the only pictures I have are from the very beginning of the parade. On the other hand, that let me get them annotated and sorted in finite time.) A few are behind the cut (at relatively small size), but you can also see the full gallery at http://www.aq.org/~js/gallery/2006.06-mermaid_parade/.

These are pictures of what will hopefully soon be my new house in Quincy; it’s the left right half of this duplex. Cross your fingers for me!

I’ve put some pictures from my trip with [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine to California up at http://www.aq.org/~js/gallery/2005.06-california/. Highlights include lots of scenery (with a substantial quantity of Joshua trees and pine trees), an antique pink Chevrolet, and cathijosephine herself.

This is quick, because I’m very sleepy, but I’ve been meaning for a while to point people at my friend [livejournal.com profile] ragingamazon’s journal. She’s a photojournalist, and she’s spending three months in Israel (with side trips). That means especially interesting stories and pictures. (This userpic is cropped with permission from a picture she took, by the way.)

In case anybody wants them, I have pictures of signage in Davis Square up at http://pics.livejournal.com/beowabbit/gallery/00004y8h. I’m going to be picking one of those to crop for a userpic at some point, but in the meantime I thought other people might want to do the same. The colours are a bit weird, because it was pretty late and pretty overcast when I took the pictures.
beowabbit: (Me: swimming at the Ledges)
Yes, I should be asleep, but I’m still on Hawai‘i time, which means I’m still puttering around at 2:00am EST.

I’ve started a page with free (public-domain) LiveJournal userpics cropped and resized from pictures I’ve taken. Right now there are only a handful, but I’ll add to them. Feel free to grab and use, for LiveJournal or anything else. (Note that I’m only releasing the cropped, resized 100x100-pixel images into the public domain; the originals are not, although if you want a larger version of one of them drop me a note or comment and I might be happy to accommodate you.)

The userpics are available at http://www.aq.org/~js/clipart/userpics/, or in a less-scrolling-required grid format at http://www.aq.org/~js/clipart/userpics/grid.html.

(By the way, I used to use the gecko picture there as one of my own userpics, but I’ve retired it.)
beowabbit: (Hawaii: palm tree in Honolulu)
I don’t have nearly all the pictures from my trip sorted and annotated yet, but I have up the pictures of the Robot Garbage Truck, and a whole bunch of pictures of Hamlet. They’re on the top two links on my picture gallery.
beowabbit: (Animals: Schnapps)
So last night’s Poly Boston dinner at Sol, the Brazilian barbeque buffet in Kenmore Square, was lots of fun and well-attended. I think there were about ten people there, maybe more, including one person for whom it was their first Poly Boston event and one for whom it was their second. The food was yummy, and the company was lots of fun. Especially the green company. (One of us had turned green, but it had nothing to do with envy, nor with the food.)

I had been thinking of going out to Western Mass for the bowling trip, but I decided yesterday or thereabouts that my life between now and when I leave for Hawai’i on the 10th is way too full. So of course I puttered around and procrastinated most of today instead of getting ready for my trip. :-)

This morning, though, I went over to visit Bearpaw (a friend and former housemate who lives nearby) and Schnapps. Schnapps was [livejournal.com profile] sionnagh’s cat when she first moved in with me (and Bearpaw). But by the time the household separated, Schnapps had bonded strongly with Bearpaw and (especially) his partner Lisa, and [livejournal.com profile] sionnagh and [livejournal.com profile] docorion and I had a dog that Schnapps did not get along with, so Schnapps stayed with Bearpaw and Lisa.

Schnapps has had serious kidney failure for several months now (it was diagnosed last summer), and is probably near the end of her days. She’s lost a lot of her vision and (I think probably) her hearing. But she’s still energetic enough to climb up on my lap, and seems content to curl up by the window in the sun.

I put some pictures of her in my photo gallery. (Also, if you scroll down to the bottom, there are a few pictures from Ottawa Pride back in 1995. See, I told you I’d been procrastinating.)

Hi. If I want to take indoor pictures with my digital camera (photo-shoot style rather than candid-snapshot style, but not professional-grade), and I don't want to be dependent on the flash or on sunlight through windows, what do I need in the way of lighting, and how much should I expect to pay for it?
beowabbit: (Misc: rigging of the schooner Fame)
I’ve finally got my pictures from Shayde’s birthday party aboard the Fame organized and resized, and checked in with people for permission to post them. So here they are!
beowabbit: (Me: taking pictures in Hawaii)
Howdy. I have lots to post from this past weekend, but no time right now, so that will wait. However, I thought some of my readers might be interested in what I did the previous weekend. Despite the cold I had, I went over to [livejournal.com profile] dan4th’s and took a whole bunch of naughty pictures of him. He is posting some of the better ones, one per day or so, at http://pics.livejournal.com/dan4th/ — right now the ones I took are all in the Nudity gallery. (So far there’s nothing very explicit there; I make no guarantees for the future.)

That was fun – first time I’d done a photo shoot like that!

OK, this is not really going to be entertaining to anybody but me, but I picked up a box of juice off the shelf at a Store 24 near my house on the way home tonight, and noticed that it had another language on the other side. And I noticed it was in Cyrillic. And I noticed it was not Russian, but Bulgarian. Not a language I’m used to seeing in a random convenience store.

beowabbit: (me looking at camera in tree at BiCamp 2)
Hi! I’ve got some BiCamp pictures up at http://www.aq.org/~js/gallery/2004.07.30-bicamp/ for your viewing pleasure. (I also cropped and resized a few of them for use as LJ userpics, which you can find at http://www.aq.org/~js/tmp/bicamp-userpics/ — feel free to steal those for your own journals.)

Currently, I have lots of pictures without people up, and three pictures of me, because I obviously didn’t want to put up pictures of other people without their permission. If I took pictures of you at BiCamp and you don’t mind me posting them on the web, please let me know, either by email or by commenting here. (And let me know how, or whether, you’d like to be identified in the caption, if not by first name.) I’d like to get a few pictures with people up to better communicate the feel of BiCamp.

A few of the pictures make good desktop backgrounds, I think.

(Crossposted in [livejournal.com profile] bicamp and my own journal.)

So [livejournal.com profile] sionnagh and I went to the Turbo Tabla bellydance concert at Karim Nagi Mohammed’s Arabesque series at Club Passim. Wow, that was an awesome experience.

micro-review, with pictures )

If you like Arabic music or dance music, you should go to http://www.turbotabla.com/cds/ and follow the links to listen to some samples and consider buying a CD or two. I haven’t listened to the first Turbo Tabla CD, but I’ve listened to several tracks of the Bellydance Overdrive CD (which are very similar to the second half of the concert, but more processed), and it’s great.

This has been a public service announcement. We now return you to your regularly scheduled blog, already in progress.
