New laptop

Yesterday at work I got a new laptop, a 12" PowerBook. Yay! Good timing, since my own laptop died a couple of months ago, so I’ve been without. Part of the motivation is that an increasing number of the faculty have Macs, and we’d like to be smarter about how they fit into our environment.

Maybe I’ll spend today working in the lounge with the nice view of the MFA, because I can. :-)

I'm experiencing that phenomenon, too. Macs seem to be getting more and more popular at our college. I wish I had an enlightened network administrator who would think in terms of bending in the direction the wind is blowing, but no, she's just very hostile to the Mac people and refuses to give them much support. *sigh*

I'm a Unix sysadmin for Northeastern University's College of Computer and Information Science. I've been at that job for about eight years. Before that I had a year stint at the W3C's MIT office, three years at BU, and three years at Princeton. I like working in academia. (I also like nosy people.)

oh, neat. that sounds like a really cool job.

i used to do tech support back when i was a student at smith. i'd like to get back into it at some point. oh, i miss living/working in an academic environment. congratulations on your new powerbook, btw. aren't the 12" models amazing? they're so small and perfect.

Yeah, it’s a great size! Small and light enough to take around with me everywhere, and having built-in wireless is great. Yeah, I realize that this century that’s not such a big deal, but it’s been a long time since I got a new laptop, and that wasn’t such an up-to-date model. (That was the one I fried a couple months ago. I hope to still use it for something; it‘ll boot off a CD, but it doesn’t see internal hard drives any more.)

I’m lucky; I never really left an academic environment. (And since my father was an English professor, and my mother and stepfather work for a university, I’ve really been in academic environments all my life.)
