I just got back from seeing The Fog of War with [livejournal.com profile] zzbottom and [livejournal.com profile] missdimple. It’s a documentary on Robert McNamara’s time as Secretary of Defense (during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War), centered on an interview with him, but with lots of footage and recordings from the time. It’s really, really good. The Phillip Glass soundtrack worked very well for the subject matter. Dreaming is right — everybody should see this movie, more than once. And I wish there were more movies like it. I said afterwards that it’s rare to see a movie that’s both a work of history, of nonfiction, and a work of art, and very good at both.

Beforehand we had dinner at Zaftig’s (since Rami’s was closed — obvious in retrospect, but I had spaced on the fact that it was shabbat), and afterwards we had ice cream and talked about the movie at JP Licks across the street.

On a completely different note, this is completely and utterly not my kink.

Fog of War is on my list of films to see.

[history geek] However, to paraphrase John Cleese in the Bookshop Sketch:

"I think you'll find Robert McNamara was Secretary of Defense, sir"

I don't know, so I looked it up.

According to the OED, both "defense" and "defence" predate the US's founding, so neither can properly be claimed to be an Americanization of an English word. That having been said, the OED lists "defense" as the spelling "now usual in the United States".

FYI, "defense" is Middle English from Old French adapted from Latin, as is the word "defens", from which (apparently) comes "defence".

R wanted to see this, but we didn't work out a time to do so. If we do manage to do so, shall we ask you along for the "more than once" experience?

Not your kink

You know, at first glance I read "fistulated" as "frustrated" and you can imagine what I started to imagine!
