I heard today that a former housemate of mine (and of [livejournal.com profile] sionnagh’s) died yesterday, after heart surgery. I hadn’t been in very good touch with her since she moved to California, and didn’t even know until a couple weeks ago that she’d moved back to this coast, but I certainly have very fond memories of her. I don’t believe in an afterlife, but I enjoy the fancy that now she’s feeding Schnapps tunafish somewhere, as in life.

(I don’t like turning off comments, but I don’t need support; I’m fine. I just wanted to mark something important in my life.)

I think the thing that turns me off of mainstream Christianity the most is that insistence that only humans have a soul and thus immortal life after death. If I have to live forever, what on earth good is it without animals? To never feel a cat purring again? Terrible.

I would like to spend my afterlife feeding Rosie pancakes. I'm sure she would enjoy it, too.

Mainstream Christianity does not believe this. You might want to read The Great Divorce or The Problem of Pain by C. S. Lewis, who might clear up some of your misconceptions about mainstream Christianity.

Since I don't want to clutter up [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit's post with inappropriate discussion, feel free to e-mail me (dsh at sp-webdesign dot com) if you want to discuss this further.

Catholicism does, which is what serves as the dominant form of Christianity around these parts.

I am about as devout a Catholic layperson as you will find, and you are mistaken.

Of course, animal have souls and an afterlife. Otherwise, humans would have no dinner on the other side (and plants must have a soul so that dead human vegetarians can eat in the afterlife).

WHen I was a kid, my mother told me angels eat the food left on your plate after dinner. I had nightmares about being a hungry angel for years.

My bishop very specifically told me that animals do not go to heaven because they do not have souls (and only souls go to heaven). He told me that when I got to heaven, I would not care about there not being animals there because of my joy at being with God. I take that as being the official doctine because, well, a bishop said it. But I also take it as being a bunch of idiocy.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Is it someone other people in the community know?

That's very unfortunate.
