Howard Dean on a public health-insurance option

I meant to post this earlier, and seeing [livejournal.com profile] elusiveat’s post about it here has reminded me to do so.

A few days ago, Howard Dean was on WBUR’s On Point talk show discussing the importance of a public option in healthcare reform. He had a lot of really good and interesting stuff to say.

Here’s a direct link to the MP3 file, and here’s a link to the On Point podcast feed.

(Sorry, I don’t have a Howard Dean userpic. :-)

The public option, while I'm sure it has some technical points that need ironing out, seems like a basically good idea to me.

Why has the right rolled out the full blown lying/hating machine against it? Is it just a partisan "make Obama fail" attempt? Have they said "government health care = communism" for so long that they can't say anything else at this point? Comedy option C? If there were a real problem you think they would raise it, rather than telling outrageously scary lies, so what's their real motive?

Dean definitely has some opinions on the answers to these questions.
