Update

You know that feeling you had sometimes as a kid, if you were lucky and had a good childhood, that everything was OK and you were safe and warm at home and your parents loved you and would take care of you? I just spooned some of that feeling out of a crockpot into a bowl. (Only I burned my tongue on it a little bit.) Crockpot chicken and dumplings. It’s like love, only you should blow on it first.

Y'know, I had that kind of benevolent 50's childhood, although it was the 60's and 70's, with the working father and the stay-at-home mother, and the Church Cookbook dinners - lots of casseroles - just without the crock pot. Mom didn't get a crock pot until I was at least in high school. And really (checks to see that no one [especially Mom] is listening) Mom wasn't a great cook, and I will probably never get nostalgic for clean-out-the-fridge casseroles. And furthermore (really checks to see that Mom isn't listening) I'm a much better cook than Mom was/is, and I make a pretty kick-ass Chicken & Dumplings [thanks to Cook's Illustrated], but I still rarely use my crock pot. Enjoy!

I wonder how that might be, if you chose to blow first on the things you love, too. -H...

It's not a bad idea to blow on the love first, either. :)
