Pandora

I was recently introduced to Pandora by darxus; you can read his post about it, but basically, you tell it music you like, and it plays similar music. For free, over the net. And you can give it as many different seeds as you like, and keep them separate, so you can listen to fast bluesy jazz instrumental stuff today (what I’ve been listening to today) and Europop tomorrow. I think this site is going to seriously affect how (and how much) I listen to music.

I have similar feelings about Last.fm.

I looked very briefly at Last.fm, and went so far as to download the software for MacOS X, but never got around to installing it. Am I remembering correctly that Last.fm requires you to use their software (and therefore is limited on what kind of machines you can use it on)? Pandora runs almost anywhere, since all it requires is Flash 7 — all day today I was listening to it on a Sun running Sun’s version of Unix, with a non-PC-style processor. If the CPU is fast enough, I should be able to listen to Pandora on my Nokia 770, a Linux based pocket Internet tablet.

Not that Last.fm isn’t awesome or anything; I am just really pleased that I can listen to Pandora on almost anything I might find myself sitting at that’s capable of audio and runs a real web browser. (To be fair, it has to be something that old versions of Flash are available for, but that’s a pretty large range of hardware.)

I like Pandora but I've found its song affinities somewhat startling at times...I have a channel I call "Irish Hooligans" for bands like the Pogues, Flogging Molly etc, and some of the stuff they throw in is completely out of left field and not at all related. I found that with my other channel, based on Cowboy Junkies and Mojave 3, as well. Some good stuff but a surprising amount of random noise.
Suppose I shouldn't complain about a free service that really is a pretty cool idea :)

Thanks for posting this! A friend of mine radven told me about this recently, but I didn't get the information about where to find it, and have been forgetting to ask. I'll be playing with this later today!
