I just got back from my first trip to the gym in a very long time. (Good for working off nervous energy.) I feel great. I hope I feel half this good after contra dancing on Thursday.
In my case, one does the exercises on weight machines that the annoying, disorganized personal trainer one had three sessions with when one first signed up with one’s gym came up with for one, then one gets one’s book (or MP3 player) and spends about 20-40min on a stationary bike (or sometimes a treadmill or elliptical machine or stair-stepper), and then one takes a shower. There are six machines I work out on, designed to work a bunch of muscle groups. The weight machines build muscle (which also helps one burn fat, since the muscle takes more calories to maintain even when inactive), and the stationary bike is for cardiovascular health and weight loss. Or something.
I’m lucky in that I work at a university, so I can use the university gym for relatively cheap, and it’s right across the street from my building. If I had to make a special trip to go to the gym it would probably never happen.
It was a big step for me to join the gym and start going, since my previous association with gyms was getting teased and beaten up in P.E. in grade school. :-) But it’s fun!
