Death at Ruggles [EDIT: Maybe not; news reports say he's being treated.]

As I was walking through Ruggles Station to get a Jamaican patty this morning (just a few minutes ago), there was a huge crowd of firefighters, and a few cops and EMTs. I saw that a large cluster of passengers was gathered in a clump between the turnstiles and the escalators, and the escalators were roped off. I asked the vendor if she knew what was going on, and she said that a young guy had jumped onto the tracks and been electrocuted. (Fortunately not hit by a train — that’s really rough on the conductors.)

Just after that, they wheeled the (presumed) body out of the elevator on a stretcher. They had an oxygen mask on him, but there was no sense of urgency, so I’m pretty sure they thought he was dead. *Sigh*.

There were at least 20 firefighters there. I imagine Orange Line service will be delayed for a while.

[Edit: This article says he’s “being treated for serious burns”, so evidently he didn’t die. Hope he recovers.]

Hugs-
sorry to hear it for the sake of the kid and for everyone, including you, who were affected by it. When I read the cut text I was concerned it was something more ... violent. Still- no fun.

I just wanted to say how much I like this icon/picture of you.

And that I found your story ... um ... shocking.

I assumed the same, since it is Ruggles. :( I don't really miss that T station now that I have graduated.

Though I am an EMT, I haven't had to dealing with someone dying on me on the spot, though there have been a few that made it to the hospital then died later. The optimist in me says they weren't rushing because he was stable, though I am sure there will be news about it.

I did EMT work, also, and have had my own significant exposure to too much death. The hardest thing I had to convince myself of was (1) that things would have been worse had I not been on the scene, and that (2) even if I hadn't been there, this (whatever the tragedy was) would still have happened. It wasn't easy.

Curious, the link I embedded in this, to http://www.livejournal.com/users/agaran/31714.html, didn't come through.

Yeah, there are times that I need to do post-processing even when death is not involved.

Well met, too, as I know a bunch of folks you know.

Well met, indeed. Glad to hear your comment.

Ack! So sorry to hear it, though, I admit, glad it didn't involve a train as well.

*hugs* to you

Geeze. What a lousy start to your day. And what a lousy end to a life. Sorry he had to do it and you had to witness the aftermath.

Hugs,

Cory

(P. S. -- My new meds are making me groggy and stupid, so if I say anything out of line, it wasn't really me.)

Apparently there was also a jumper at Porter around 11am. He did get hit by a train.

Correction: Somerville News says it was in the tunnel near Alewife. The Porter report was apparently wrong.
