Had a great evening. [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine was organizing a trip to see The Nutcracker, and dinner at Jacob Wirth beforehand. I wasn’t feeling like I could afford the ballet, but I joined the group for dinner, which was yummy. (I had the sauerbraten. I definitely want to go back and try some of the other yummy-looking things on the menu sometime.) But it turned out that one person who’d gotten a ticket wasn’t able to go to the ballet, so I ended up joining [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine, A., and J. for that. It was the first time I’d seen The Nutcracker — or any ballet, for that matter — and I had a great time. As I said afterwards, it was interesting to hear all this music that I’m very familiar with in the context it was written for. I’d love to see a more traditional ballet sometime. (I mentioned that it was even less representational and plot-driven than I was expecting; [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine said that most ballets are more so, but you can get away with a lot when most of the ballet is a dream sequence. :-)

Anyway, wonderful evening with wonderful company. And now to bed.

I'm glad you enjoyed the experience. I've only been to the ballet 3 times (Bolshoi, Boston, and some chinsy avant garde amateur production in San Diego). I love that marriage of music, movement, dance, and scene design. After all, ballet is only one step removed from opera! Of course, I'm more familiar with the music than with the dance, but I appreciate both facets of ballet.

i LOVE the ballet. i miss it as it's been years since i last went. my mom used to take me to the ballet at least two times a year, plus other dance as well (martha graham and alvin ailey in particular).

one of the things i'm looking forward to about going home to NYC will be the fact that there's an abundance of dance, as well as the ability to be able to afford it due to my extremely nice living situation.

I'm so glad you had fun!

The Nutcracker is the only ballet I have seen live, but I'd love to catch another one with you sometime. You know I love every opportunity to dress up and watch sculpted asses in tights!
