Beer disrecommendation

Last night at Trader Joe’s I noticed six-packs of Ekstra, a Lithuanian white beer. It didn’t look too appetizing in its green bottles, but I figured I’d try it, since I’d never had a Lithuanian beer before.

I suppose it’s nice to know that the United States doesn’t have a monopoly on bad beer.

Anybody want five and a half bottles of Lithuanian white beer?

Oh no, the United States does not have a monopoly on bad beer. And Eastern Europe has (or had) more than its share. They have a long tradition (esp. in E. Germany and the Czech Republic) of great beer. But the Communists were amazing at turning out cheap crap, and beer was no exception. I think the worst beer I ever had was in Budapest in 1992. It was only about $0.25 a glass. Also had bad beer in East Germany (Rostock was horrible but Eisenach managed to continue to produce good beer), Yugoslavia and Russia. Most of the bad breweries have closed in the last 10-12 years but a few have managed to survive. I will remember to avoid Lituanian beer.

And no, I don't want any Lithuanian white beer. If my father were still alive, he would. And I have an alcoholic friend in Maine who will drink anything. But I don't expect to be seeing him anytime soon.

I'm sure there must be a household use for bad beer but it escapes me at the moment.

Now that you mention it, we have a recipe for a very good drink that requires bad beer. We normally make it with something like Miller High Life. It would be worth trying with bad Lithuanian white beer!

Or this particular brand, anyway; a few months ago I heard a bit on NPR about the young and burgeoning microbrew industry in one of the Baltics. (I think it was Lithuania, but I‘m not 100% sure.) One of the points was that the breweries vary a lot in quality.

I know the green bottles are supposed to help
preserve beer from sunlight. Guess there's
also the masking function to help put one over
on the consumer?
