Last few days / next week / Kala

Well, the last few days have been good. Any weekend that involves seeing lots of cathijosephine and some of faerieschylde, and a couple nice car trips, is all right in my book. Oh, it also involved some early-70s electric-organ music. :-)

I'm about to take off for Ithaca, for a conference for work. I'll drive there today, be at the conference for two days, and drive back on Thursday.

Then early Friday morning, cathijosephine and I will be flying to California so she can see (as she puts it) her brain doctor. We'll get to see harlequinaide for a bit, and I'll meet her parents.

Any week that involves two long car trips and two plane flights is all right in my book. Alas, cathijosephine isn't as thrilled with the plane idea as I am, but hey, that's part of why I'm going with her.

On another topic, I just wanted to mention how nice it's been having Kala around. (As I've mentioned earlier, she's renting our spare room while she works on a project.) She's been in intense-work mode, so we haven't really been socializing much, but it's very comforting to know she's working away in her room, and to see her smiling face in the kitchen.

OK, must leave now if I want to get to Ithaca in time for registration...

I lived in Ithaca from 1981 till 1986 (grad school) and absolutely loved it there (the town, NOT the grad school). I hope you have a nice visit!

Cool; what did you like about it? I don't know how much spare time I'll have, but is there anything in particular I should see while I'm here?

The part of Ithaca that I loved that's most accessible to visitors is the scenery. There are gorges with waterfalls in them that are just beautiful. There are so many beautiful places that there isn't even widespread agreement about which is the prettiest place to take visitors. :-) My favorite place while I was there was probably Upper Robert H. Treman State Park (not to be confused with LOWER Treman). There's a path near the end of the parking lot at Upper Treman that takes you through a forest to a little waterfall. Fifty feet further along, there's another little waterfall. Keep walking, and there's yet another little waterfall. You can hike three miles down to Lower Treman and see a little waterfall every hundred feet most of the way, and the part that isn't waterfalls is hilly forest. Just beautiful.

The part of Ithaca that I think you'd appreciate the most may have changed since I lived there and isn't as readily seen by casual visitors as the scenery. But Ithaca is a very alternativey place, the sort of place where I'd tell someone that I was a bisexual vegetarian, and they'd just sort of nod. Isn't everybody? The Cornell - Ithaca relations were amusing in that it was the TOWN that was more liberal and the UNIVERSITY that was more conservative.

Of course, it's been awhile since 1988, so I don't know if it's still like that.

It is. I lived there for a few years as well, ending less than two years ago.

As far as I can tell, Ithaca doesn't really change much. That's a good thing.

I sure do miss having a nice cheap house with a lake view, among many other things...

Thanks! It's nice to know that the Ithaca I knew and loved is still there. Might go back there, someday.
