Quick catch-up
2006-08-01 22:22This weekend was filled with sleeping; it was glorious! I didn’t get as much done as I wanted to, but, dude, SLEEP! And I did get some things done.
For those of you who aren’t aware of it, yes, it is broiling in New England.
Today
cathijosephine and I went to Canobie Lake Park, where we had a truly fabulous time. I got to go on all my favourite rides that I don’t always get to go on when I go there, and
cathijosephine loved them all, too. And I had yummy ribs and she had yummy sausage and we played skee-ball, and when we we thought we were going to melt we ducked into the video arcade for air conditioning and when we thought we were going to melt again we went on a water ride.
Oh, Monday night I made it to the second half of a story reading, which is always fun. I read a little piece by Art Buchwald called “Mars Is Ours”, which involved the US and the Soviet Union agreeing to divide Mars into North Viet-Mars and South Viet-Mars and sending advisers, and somebody else read a contemporary description of the pastimes and amusements of 16th-century London, and there were a bunch of other things worth remembering notwithstanding my present failure to do so.
Sunday night I rented some air conditioning for $2.50; see below.
Reading: Equal Rites, the third Discworld novel, and significantly better than the first two. Pratchett seems to have hit his stride in this one.
Watching: Sunday night I went to the local second-run movie theater (about ten minutes’ walk away, if that) and saw the recent remake of The Omen. I saw the original in the theater (probably not when it first came out, I’m guessing, since I would have been 10, but maybe), and the remake follows the original very closely. Better in some places, worse in others, but generally similar enough that I almost wonder what the point was of re-shooting the movie. To be fair, the cinematography in the new version was quite good, and there were some long shots of travelling scenes that give the remake a much more expansive feel — although come to think of it, that may not be a good thing for a horror movie —, and the remake clearly benefitted from a higher budget. But basically it was the same movie with different actors more than a remake. I enjoyed it, though.
A couple of incongruities struck me: ( Possible very very mild spoilers. ) OK, so not the most momentous criticism imaginable, but still, those bits messed with my suspension of disbelief.
I have to say, the acting was very very good (except for Damien, who, as in the original, was mostly a malevolent glare).
